THE STAFF

Practice Manager - Karen Hermans
Karen's job is to promote an efficient and smooth-running practice, so if you have any problems or suggestions to do with the practice, she will be pleased to discuss them with you.

Practice Nurses
Our team of practice nurses are all registered and have a wide range of experience
and skills. We also have nurses specially trained in diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, asthma, family planning, COPD and coronary care. They also run clinics for immunisation, anticoagulation and travel advice. We also have qualified healthcare assistants who assist the practice nurses.

Nurse Practitioner – Margaret Squibb
Our nurse practitioner has undergone extensive additional training that includes the ability to prescribe independently. Patients can actually request to see the nurse practitioner in preference to a GP, and the practice encourages many cases to consult with Mrs Squibb in the first instance, particularly for minor illnesses such as: sore throats, tonsillitis, sinusitis, earache, ear infection, eye problems (eyestrain, conjunctivitis), urine infection, vaginal problems (thrush, discharge), digestive problems (constipation, indigestion/heartburn), skin problems (eczema, impetigo, acne), head lice, rashes, bites, stings and wounds, cold sores, coughs, chest infections. In this way more doctor time can be freed up so that they are able to deal with the more complex cases. Nonetheless, Mrs Squibb works alongside the GPs and is be able to recruit their assistance where necessary to conclude a consultation.

Receptionists
They are fully trained and have a difficult job to do. Please remember that if you are asked some apparently irritating questions, it is because we need to ascertain the urgency of some requests. If you are kept waiting, it is because the doctor sometimes needs to spend longer with a patient than has been allowed. We will, however, endeavour to keep you informed if the doctor has been delayed for any reason.

ATTACHED STAFF

Midwives
The midwives hold antenatal clinics at the Health Clinic and usually share the care of expectant mothers with the doctors and the hospital clinics. They care for mother and baby for 10 days following delivery and can be contacted via the Maternity Unit on 534392.

Community Nurses
There is a community nursing team attached to the surgery. Their primary role is to provide continuation of care in the community at the request of the hospital or the practice doctors.

They can be contacted by telephoning 409220 between 12 noon and 12.30pm on weekdays.

Health Visitors
Health visitors Promote the health of the local community and encourage healthy lifestyles, addressing concerns about physical and mental wellbeing. Particularly, they work with mothers of young babies - advising on such areas as feeding, safety, physical and emotional development and other aspects of health and childcare. All health visitors are qualified nurses or midwives, with additional special training and experience in child health, health promotion and education. Sandown's clinics are held on a Wednesday morning between 9.00 - 11.30am with no appointment needed and we welcome holidaymakers who wish to seek advice on their under fives. Telephone 0844 815 1952.
