Other InformationNon-NHS ServicesMedical examinations for life insurance, driving medicals and consultation for patients from abroad can be arranged by appointment. A scale of recommended fees for non-NHS work is available at reception. Hospital ReferralsWhen we refer patients to other services, the referral is administered by the local NHS Referral Management Centre which is responsible for allocating your referral to services and normally sees the full information about the referral, including any confidential information. If your GP is referring you to other services and you feel there is any information you wish to withhold from the Referral Management Centre, please inform your GP as soon as possible during normal working hours. If you experience problems with the Referral Management Centre or wish to discuss its role further, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 534850 ChoiceIf you require a referral to the hospital to see a consultant, your GP will offer you the choice of one of four different hospitals. St Mary's on the Isle of Wight will always be one of the four choices and for most people will be the most logical option. Your GP will guide you when he /she feels that there would be an advantage to go off the Isle of Wight. Whilst visiting a mainland hospital might seem attractive for the first visit, once we have involved a mainland hospital any surgery (if nessecary) and follow-ups such as physiotherapy etc, will have to take place at the mainland. For most of us, referral to St Mary's remains the most appropriate location. Your GP will provide you with a booklet about choice at the time of referral. Choose and bookThis government is working towards GPs making your outpatient appointment for you when adecision is made to refer you to a consultant at the hospital. The system is in its early days and there is a number of problems. At the moment it is likely that the best your GP can offer you is to give you a telephone number, another number and a password to quote when you phone the Referral Support Centre to negotiate your appointment.
